'재생 에너지와 의식 있는 지역사회, 청년을 위한 기회 및 새로운 경로를 통한 지속 가능한 삶과 생계의 조화(Harnessing sustainable lives And livelihoods through Renewable energy and Mindful communities, Opportunities and New pathways for Youth)'의 약자인 HARMONY는 지난 3년 동안 소규모 지역 시범 사업에서 다개년/다개주 규모의 심도 있는 농촌 개발 엔진으로 진화해 왔습니다.

하나의 비전, 두 개의 서로 다른 지역

인도 농촌 지역은 지형에 따라 매우 미묘하고 상이한 인프라 현실을 보여줍니다. 이에 따라 HARMONY 3단계는 극대화된 효과를 창출하기 위해 완전히 독특한 환경적·사회적 과제에 직면한 두 개의 지리적 대조 지역에 역량을 집중했습니다.

• 인도 하리아나주 구루그람: 인도 국립수도지역(델리 및 NCR) 외곽에 위치한 이 지역은 급격한 도시화, 녹지 감소, 그리고 도시 빈곤층이 필수적인 디지털 및 금융 문해력을 갖추지 못한 극심한 빈부 격차로 고통받고 있습니다.

• 인도 우타라칸드주 묵테슈와르: 히말라야 산맥에 자리 잡은 청정하면서도 생태적으로 취약한 산악 지형입니다. 이곳은 불규칙한 몬순(우기) 주기와 자연 산악 샘물의 고갈로 인해 전통적인 농업과 일상적인 생존이 심각하게 위협받고 있습니다.

프로젝트 HARMONY는 청정 에너지, 수자원 확보, 디지털 형평성을 결합한 통합적 접근 방식을 배포함으로써 이러한 과제들에 정면으로 맞서 성공을 거두었습니다.

핀커넥트(FinConnect)를 통한 금융 포용의 심화

어피닛의 기업 정신 중심에는 언제나 '금융 포용'이 자리 잡고 있습니다. 프로젝트는 '핀커넥트(FinConnect)' 이니셔티브를 통해 참가자들이 기본적인 돈 관리 수준을 넘어 전략적인 비즈니스 사고방식을 가질 수 있도록 고안된 집중 금융 문해력 및 비즈니스 부트캠프를 운영했습니다. 건조하고 이론적인 강의에서 벗어나, 게임화된 실제 금융 생활 시뮬레이션 세션을 통해 400명 이상의 농촌 청년들의 참여를 이끌어냈습니다.

구루그람에서는 3개 반의 교육 과정을 통해 약 220명의 청년들이 현대적인 비즈니스 환경에 적응할 수 있도록 준비시켰습니다. 한편, 묵테슈와르에서는 영세 기업을 운영하는 지역 여성들이 대거 참여한 183명의 수강생이 예산 관리, 디지털 UPI(인도의 즉시 실시간 결제 시스템) 뱅킹 보안, 시장 연계에 관한 중요한 교훈을 배웠습니다. 또한, 물리적인 기술 격차를 해소하기 위해 우수한 성적을 거둔 학생들과 지역 교육 공간에 고성능 노트북 10대를 기증하여 디지털 학습을 위한 영구적인 지역사회 거점을 마련했습니다.

교육에 힘을 싣고 생태계를 지키다

프라기아 카크샤 (Pragya Kaksh - 깨우친 교실)

인프라는 배움의 근간입니다. 프로젝트 HARMONY는 주 정부가 운영하는 국립학교들에 '프라기아 카크샤(깨우친 교실)'로 현지에 알려진 태양광 기반 디지털 교실 7개소를 성공적으로 개보수했습니다. 프로젝트 전반에 걸쳐 누적 약 35kW 규모의 친환경 분산형 지붕 태양광 그리드와 스마트 TV를 결합함으로써, 과거 잦은 정전으로 고통받던 학생들이 이제 끊김 없는 멀티미디어 학습을 누릴 수 있게 되었습니다. 이러한 공간은 학교를 오염 물질을 배출하는 디젤 발전기로부터 성공적으로 독립시켜 건강과 기후 측면에서 가시적인 동반 이익을 가져다줍니다.

잘 암리트 (Jal Amrit - 생명의 물)

가뭄에 메마른 묵테슈와르 언덕 지역에서는 '잘 암리트(생명의 물)' 수자원 보존 캠페인을 시행했습니다. HARMONY는 산악 유출수의 흐름을 늦추기 위해 돌로 채워진 사방댐과 대형 콘크리트 저장 탱크로 구성된 분산형 집수 구조물 9개를 카시야레크, 수피, 다리마, 순키야 등 4개 중심 마을에 건설했습니다. 이를 통해 일관되고 깨끗한 지하수 보충이 가능해졌으며, 극심한 가뭄으로부터 지역 농민과 가족들을 직접적으로 보호할 수 있게 되었습니다.

지역사회 주도의 환경 수호

진정한 지속 가능성은 지역사회의 적극적인 주인의식을 필요로 합니다. '프로젝트 니르말야(Nirmalya - 환경 정화 이니셔티브)' 아래, HARMONY는 수백 명의 마을 청년들과 학생들을 동원해 지역사회 정화 활동과 구조물 도색 작업을 진행했습니다. 발루가드 폭포와 바텔리아 시장 같은 주요 거점에는 다채롭고 교육적인 거리 벽화가 그려졌습니다. 이 벽화들은 지역의 예술 작품과 필수적인 사회적 메시지를 조화롭게 담아냈습니다.

공식적인 종료 행사는 3단계의 성공적인 마무리를 의미하지만, 어피닛/트루밸런스와 TERI가 다져놓은 기초 작업은 자립적인 운동의 불씨를 지폈습니다. 당면 과제는 프라기아 카크샤 교실, 잘 암리트 구조물, 태양광 가로등 그리드의 완전한 운영 권한을 현지 학교 관리 위원회와 마을 판차야트(민주적으로 선출된 마을 의회)로 직접 이관하는 원활한 전환을 이루는 것입니다.

The journey toward true community empowerment requires more than isolated interventions; it demands an integrated blueprint that respects local ecosystems while opening doors to the global digital economy. This vision culminated on May 19, 2026, as True Balance alongside its implementing partner, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), hosted the official closure ceremony for Project HARMONY Phase 3 at the TERI Gram campus in Gwal Pahari, Gurugram, India.

An acronym for Harnessing sustainable lives And livelihoods through Renewable energy and Mindful communities, Opportunities and New pathways for Youth, HARMONY has spent the last three years evolving from a modest regional pilot into a profound multi-state rural development engine.

One Vision, Two Distinct Geographies

Rural India presents highly nuanced infrastructural realities depending on the terrain. To create maximum impact, Phase 3 focused its efforts on two geographically distinct regions facing entirely unique environmental and social challenges:

• Gurugram, Haryana: Located on the outskirts of India’s National Capital Region (Delhi and NCR), this area suffers from hyper-urbanization, dwindling green covers, and a stark wealth gap where the urban poor lack essential digital and financial literacy.

• Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand: A pristine but ecologically fragile mountain terrain nestled in the Himalayan range. Here, erratic monsoon cycles and drying natural mountain springs severely threaten traditional agriculture and daily survival.

By deploying an integrated approach combining clean energy, water security, and digital equity, Project HARMONY successfully met these challenges head-on.

Deepening Financial Inclusion via FinConnect

At the heart of True Balance's corporate ethos is financial inclusion. Through the FinConnect initiative, the project hosted intensive financial literacy and business boot camps designed to transition participants from basic money management to strategic enterprise thinking. Moving past dry, theoretical lectures, the program engaged over 400 rural youth through gamified, real-world financial life simulation sessions.

In Gurugram, three training batches prepared approximately 220 young minds for modern business environments. Meanwhile, in Mukteshwar, a batch of 183 participants, heavily represented by local women running nano-enterprises, learned critical lessons in budget management, digital UPI (Unified Payments Interface, India's instant real-time payment system) banking safety, and market linkages. To bridge the physical technology gap, 10 high-performance laptops were distributed to top-performing students and local educational spaces, creating permanent communal nodes for digital learning.

Powering Education and Securing Ecosystems

Pragya Kaksh (Enlightened Classrooms)

Infrastructure is the backbone of learning. Project HARMONY successfully retrofitted 7 solar-powered digital classrooms, known locally as Pragya Kaksh (Enlightened Classrooms), across state-run government schools. By pairing clean, decentralized rooftop solar grids (~35 kW cumulatively across the project) with smart TVs, students who previously faced frequent blackouts now enjoy uninterrupted multimedia learning. HARMONY constructed 9 decentralized water harvesting structures, consisting of rock-filled check dams to slow mountain runoff and heavy-duty concrete storage tanks across four central villages: Kasiyalekh, Supi, Darima, and Sunkiya. This ensures consistent, clean groundwater recharge, directly shielding local farmers and families from devastating dry spells.

Community-Led Environmental Guardianship

True sustainability requires active community ownership. Under Project Nirmalya (Environment Cleanliness Initiative), HARMONY mobilized hundreds of village youth and students for community cleanliness drives and structural painting. Colorful, educational street murals were painted in prominent hubs like the Bhalugaad Waterfall and Bhatelia Market. These murals blend local artwork with vital social messaging, featuring phrases like:

• Swachh Raho, Swasth Raho (“Stay Clean, Stay Healthy”) near prominent temple routes.

• Clean Today, Better Tomorrow on institutional walls to foster early civic pride.

To combat severe Himalayan soil erosion, the community came together to plant over 400 specialized saplings and medicinal plants, anchoring the fragile mountain topsoil while creating long-term agricultural utility for local women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Furthermore, 50 solar streetlights were positioned along dark mountain corridors, routes to the Mukteshwar Temple, and rural pathways, greatly improving safety and mobility for women and children after sundown.

Looking to the Horizon: Exploring the Next Phase

While the official closure event marks the successful conclusion of Phase 3, the foundational work laid by True Balance and TERI has ignited a self-sustaining movement. The immediate focus is moving toward a seamless transition, handing over complete operational control of the Pragya Kaksh classrooms, Jal Amrit structures, and solar street grids directly to local school management committees and village Panchayats (democratically elected village councils).

With three consecutive years of verifiable data highlighting over 700 youth trained and significant carbon-mitigating infrastructure established, the project coordinators are beginning to evaluate the feasibility and scope of a prospective Phase 4. Avenues under exploration include expanding this integrated model, combining clean energy, digital literacy, and water conservation, to entirely new districts, and adapting these proven Himalayan methodologies to safeguard other ecologically vulnerable regions across India. By synthesizing corporate fintech leadership with deep-rooted social responsibility, True Balance continues to demonstrate how corporate citizenship can cultivate lasting rural harmony.
